The Tesla Roadster 2020 is coming, and while Tesla CEO Elon Musk wants it to enter the world with a bang, he also cautions that the new electric hypercar is merely a “dessert” and not Tesla’s main priority.
If you watch E For Electric’s Youtube channel, then you have likely seen interviews with Ryan McCaffrey, the man behind the podcast Ride The Lightning. Recently Musk went on the show to talk about the upcoming launch of Tesla’s newest Roadster model, unveiled in 2017 and expected to hit the road in 2020.
Tesla Roadster 2020 Release
Musk seems a little tightlipped about when we may actually see the Roadster come out. “The new Roadster is kind of dessert. Do we really need a new roadster to accelerate our progress towards electrification and sustainability? No, not really,” he admitted in the podcast. While we have no new details about any possible delays or even a production schedule, Musk simply admits that he expects to be delivering these cars in 2020.
Even with an expected price tag of $200,000 or more, Musk anticipates producing about 10,000 units per year, which seems a bit high for a hypercar. But if there is one thing Musk is not lacking when it comes to his company, it is confidence.
Newest Roadster Specs
Musk boasts that the newest Tesla Roadster will blow all other hypercars out of the water, including the likes of those from manufacturers such as McLaren, Ferarri, and Lamborghini. The newest Roadster will be able to sprint from 0-60 mph in 1.9 seconds and go from 0-100 mph in 4.2 seconds, meaning that it will be able to complete a quarter mile in only 8.8 seconds. The Roadster should also have a range of at least 620 miles on a single charge, since it comes with a battery pack that is over twice the current capacity of the Model S. With a top speed of over 250 mph and 7,376 pound-feet of torque, to say that the Tesla Roadster is impressive just might be an understatement.
And Musk knows it. “We are going to do some things with the new Roadster that are kind of unfair to other cars,” he boasted in the interview.
The Roadster also comes with the ‘SpaceX package’ option, which is basically a set of cold air thrusters which are installed on the car to give it an incredible power boost. It seems like Musk even thinks that the Roadster might have a potential 3 Gs of thrust. “If you have 3 Gs of thrust, you can go in any direction. You can go up and accelerate with still more than 2 Gs,” he said.
Bring it on, Elon. We can’t wait to see your newest vehicle in action.
