The New Nissan Leaf VS. Hyundai Ioniq EV

The New Nissan Leaf and the Hyundai Ioniq EV are rarely compared side by side but they are probably the closest competitors to each other than any other electric cars out there. They both have almost the same size, same starting price at around $30,000 and they are both 4-door hatchbacks.

However, Hyundai only sold a little over 400 of Ioniq EVs last year where the Nissan Leaf’s first generation sedan was sold to over 11,000 customers. That is a bit odd, though Hyundai does admit that they have a supply issue and the car is really only available in California.

The biggest difference between the two cars besides the availability is the range. The New Nissan Leaf barely makes it acceptable with 151 miles, which will have a 225 mile option next year. The Ioniq’s range is at around 124 miles which is not practical for a lot of drivers and I would rate it as “unacceptable”.

Lastly, it looks like Nissan is moving forward with the electric car technology while Hyundai is not. As a matter of fact, Hyundai’s recent unveiling of the Nexo SUV which is powered by hydrogen fuel cells indicates that Hyundai may be moving in a wrong direction all together.
